David P. Dickson Dane County 4-H Leadership Scholarship

2017 Applications are due March 6, 4:30 pm at the Dane County Extension Office

The David P. Dickson 4-H Leadership Scholarship was estblished by the Madison West Kiwanis Foundation in memory of Dr. David Dickson, Professor of Dairy Science at UW-Madison for over three decades and long time member of Madison West Kiwanis. Dr. Dave, as he was universally know to his students, was revered as a teacher but as a dairy cattle judge and coach of the University's Dairy Cattle Judging Team, in which position he lead his teams to seven National Collegiate championships. His devotion to dairy cattle judging was sealed in 1960, when he earned the high individual honors at the National Collegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. As a member of Madison West Kiwanis, Dave was a visionary and tireless leader who poured his heart and many talents into community service through the club's numerous projects. He continued to give his best to the world until he died in 2010 at the age of 71. He left a generous bequest to the foundation and now managed  for the purpose of providing scholarships.

Program Objectives:

Because Dr. Dickson was a leader in serving both the university community through his teaching and coaching, and the greater Madison community through his activity with Madison West Kiwanis, this scholarship seeks to identify the leaders of tomorrow and assist them in gaining the education that will make it possible for their leadership potential to be fully realized. The ideals that inspired Dr. Dickson are clearly reflected in the Objects of Kiwanis International.

Awarded annually will be two $2,000 David P. Dickson 4-H Leadership Scholarships to the Dane County 4-H members who best exemplify the characteristics described in the Kiwanis International Objects. Candidates for this scholarship must be current Dane County high school seniors or first-year post-high school students who have graduated from a Dane County high school (public, private or home-based private educational program). In addition, they must be active 4-H members, and they should be able to demonstrate significant leadership within the 4-H program, their school, and the community.

The recipients of the David P. Dickson 4-H Leadership Scholarship will receive a framed certificate that will be presented at a regular meeting of the Madison West Kiwanis Club. The recipient, parents, and 4-H leader will be guests of the club at this award luncheon. For additional information and application form- 2017 Dickson Application
